at it for yourself. it is time-lapse images of a waterspout over lake michigan. that's outside of milwaukee. several waterspouts were spotted over lake michigan yesterday. the lake is about a mile away from marquette university. waterspouts are usually seen in the florida region. they were essentially tornados that develop over water.clearly tornados are over land. rob was watching this closely. >>> diana continues her quest this morning to swim. as of right now, the 62-year-old marathon swimmer completed 49 miles of that 103-mile swim. she was out of the water briefly yesterday to board a boat to treat jelly fish stings. she can still pursue her record because she was not resting on the boat. she already has been in the water longer than her last attempt, which happened in august. her swim overnight was a key test to completing that swim, which she hopes to do monday morning on the florida coast. >>> well, there's something really big going on in san francisco. the city is hosting the 47th annual big book sale. organizers say it is the largest sale of its kind on the west coast. all books cost $1.

're a republican running for president, you want to be in either michigan or florida this weekend. that's where two major straw polls are being held. cnn reporter peter hamby joining us from orlando, florida. peter, why is the contest there, florida, florida, florida, considered so important? >> reporter: florida will be the state in the general election, no doubt next year, one of them, one of the major swing states. but the state republican primary will be pivotal. the candidates believe, people in florida believe it was for john mccain in 2008 when he defeated mitt romney and catapulted himself to presidency. presidency five is the name of the confab, a philly day event, started with a debate thursday night, a conference where they all spoke. today a straw poll where 3500 or so republican activists will cast a vote in the straw poll and pick for president. rick perry is the only candidate competing in the straw poll, courting the delegates. he's expected to win. if he doesn't win, that would be a big surprise, fred. >> let's talk about another straw poll, this one being held in michigan. what's

critical of this solyndra deal. fred upton of michigan and cliff stearns of florida issued a joint statement yesterday. it read, quote, with taxpayers potentially on the hook for this half billion-dollar bust, it's time to sound the alarm about the remaining $10 billion in loan guarantees set to expire september 30." a quick timeline. it was back in september of 2009 that solyndra secured the loan guarantee of about half a billion dollars from the department of energy. in march of last year, the company's auditor had substantial doubt about solyndra's ability to continue. so red flag there. two months later president obama visited solyndra and touted it as the model for clean tech business. then in november, the company announced it would be laying off some workers in manufacturing consolidation. this past february there was a restructuring deal. the department of energy extended the loan guarantee from 7 to 10 years and then of course last month the company suddenly announced its shutdown laying off 1100 workers and went bankrupt. so it all happened very quickly. the top two exe

been very useful to democrats in michigan. in the auto industry. so, initially, you have this sort of sense of acquiescence by democrats that, all right, we don't normally offset emergency funding, but to get this through and to avoid another big fight, we're going to do it. but then democrats seemed to sense an opening. there was a newly combative attitude coming out of the white house thaw referred to earlier, and they decided to hold the line on their troops, and they voted against the c.r. in the house, sending the original, in the original vote it we want down to defeat. republicans rallied. they made cosmetic changed to get their people on board. and then the senate, which had been expected to sort of swallow whatever came over from the house, decide that had they would get their back up and that they would block, which they did. so now we're supposed to have a vote on the democrat i go version, which provides extra money in disaster relief without cutting the loan program or the other things that republicans threw in, but that's expected to fail as well. so over the weekend,

. breaking news in michigan. police say they are investigating an explosion near monroe, michigan, that seriously injured three people. the scene is located about halfway between detroit and toledo. authorities say a car bomb led to that explosion. >>> another deadly day in mexico. police shut down this busy road in the coastal town of boca del rio after they dumped 35 bodies under a highway bridge. police say it's all connected to organized crime. violence has escalated as rival gangs fight for control there. at least 35,000 people have died in drug violence in mexico over the last five years. >>> nasa says a dead satellite in space will probably make a crash landing here on earth tomorrow. the six ton piece of equipment the size of a city bus was put into orbit back in 1991. nasa experts expect the satellite to break into small pieces before falling. scientists say it could land as far north as canada or as far south as south america, but it will probably land in the ocean. the odds of pieces of the satellite hitting anyone are 1 in 3,200. nasa adds that no one has ever been hit

massachusetts governor mitt romney won in michigan by a wide margin. taking more than 50% of the vote. rick perry came in a distant second with just under 17% of the vote. but even more surprising, businessman herman kaine won in the florida straw poll with 37% of the vote. texas governor rick perry came in second with 15%. and this morning, on the "today" show, kaine said his victory was authentic and was not a protest against perry. >> message come out of that victory was simple. the voice of the people is more powerful than the voice of the media. secondly, message is more powerful than money. rick perry and mitt romney, they both spent a considerable amount of money in order to try to influence that florida straw poll. i rented a bus and went all over the state talking to people, sharing my message. that's what made the difference. >> kaine mentioned he liked the saturday night skit that spoofed the gop debate. the former owner of a pizza business says he likes it so much he will use the slogan -- vote for me, i will deliver in the next debate. >>> there is a new push to get republican
